Photographer, writer Lau Ching-Ping is based in Hong Kong, China. Inspired by the poem Moored for the Night by the Maple Bridge by the Tang Dynasty poet Zhang Ji (?-780), he visited Han Shan Temple in Suzhou in 2002. In this photograph, different groups of people are engaged in their individual worlds.
Moored for the Night by the Maple Bridge
Translated by Andrew W.F. Wong (Huang Hongfa)
The moon is down, ravens caw, a frostiness fills the sky;
By the riverside maples and fishing lights, sad, insomnious I lie.
Beyond the walls of Gusu City, where Hanshan Monastery stands,
Bong, goes the bell at midnight to touch the boat of the passer-by.
